Like a Moth to the Flame
SUCCESS!!! After 2 1/2 years of searching I finally found a deli that has authentic Italian meats, cheeses, pastas, imported Italian products...everything we have back home but for some reason is totally deficient up in this area. I was driving around and just sifted through my GPS' listings of grocery places looking for something Italian sounding. I found casa italia grocery on the list and decided to give it a shot. When I walked through the door I must have looked like the only survivor of a car wreck. I wandered the store almost disoriented, stunned in amazement that a place like this actually existed. I wandered up and down the small cramped aisles filled with Italian imported oils, drinks and foods. My feet creaking on the old wood floors. Boxes with Italian words on them piled all over the place, freezers and fridges containing fresh made ravioli, lasagna and other foods. I went up to the counter and introduced myself to the lady running the store (her name is Sarah). I told her I was excited because I was from the area near NY and there aren't any places like this around here. She laughed a bit at me because I probably sounded ridiculous. She told me that they make their own sausages and sell them and showed me the fresh mozzarella they have. I didn't buy anything but now at least I know where I can get the good stuff! Alright everyone I'm Back!
Hello everyone, It's been awhile but now I'm back. Since my semester is not consumed entirely by a large project I actually have time to keep you all updated on what I'm doing. And I'll start with what's become a tradition of this blog and thats my first impressions of my professors each semester. Here's the rundown: Professor Howe: Fraud Examination class. Nice lady, not really alot to say about her. Even keeled, sorta quiet, nothing spectacular about her. All in all, a pretty good teacher. Professor MacIver: Accounting. Older guy, with glasses that make his eyes really huge. A quiet guy, kinda reminds me of an owl...not sure why. Can tell he really loves accounting could do practice problems all day. Inexplicably lets class out early sometimes because "he's done". Professor Jones: Sports/Entertainment Law. This is an interesting guy. He's a lawyer, painter, judge, movie producer, a lot of stuff. He worked on all 3 Pirates films, is on an olympic committee, and knows a bunch of famous people and many famous sports agents. Cool guy, gonna be a fun class. Professor Curley: British Empire. This guy was born to teach history and a class like this. There is no other field of study that a man like Prof. Curley could teach. None. He's got a dry wit, makes pithy and funny comments right in the middle of a lecture, combining the two perfectly. He absolutely is enthralled with history and would fit right in sitting around with us talking. There's also something a little off about him. Not exactly sure what...but I suppose you have to be like that to be a great history teacher.Needless to say I liked him right from the start. More to come later. A Nice Little Surprise
I know its been awhile...but I'm back. Its production day at the paper but I finally found some time to post. Yesterday I got an email. One of the best emails I ever receive. "Mail Services has a package for you". Its one of the best because its like getting a little surprise. But this time I knew for sure what it was, and it made me all the more excited. I went and retrieved the package but didn't open it. I had class and I wanted to be able to enjoy what was inside. I carried it around with me for the rest of the day. Finally, at around 1:30 am last night I was able to enjoy it. I opened it and found a simply dvd case, with a piece of paper that was my packing slip. Opening the box I found a simple dvd with a while label, nothing on it. I smiled. I knew exactly what it was. I slipped it into my dvd player and sat back. The screen crackled a bit, the tell-tale sign of a VHS. But this is a dvd isn't it. Well thats the thing. The movie I ordered was never released on DVD. Instead I found a man who has access to the master VHS and made a copy. (thats legal apparantly. If you have the master you can make legal copies. The masters cost tons of money...so companies usually have them. But in the case of this film, it was cheap). It still looked great and as the title came across the screen that big stupid smile you get when you are inexpicably pleased with something came across my face. "The Northwest Passage" One of grandpa's favorite movies, from 1940 starring Spencer Tracy...and I finally found it. Good times...good times. Okay, back to work. This paper isn't going to produce itself. Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Thursday, October 4th, 2007 | | 10:53 am |

there was a weird security thing on my photos...fixed now. Enjoy Thats it and thats all Tom | | Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 | | 10:45 am |
A Birthday at the Melting Pot
Hey everyone, Last Friday, Nicole and I went to "The Melting Pot" a fondue restaurant near Bentley for her 21st birthday. Here is a little review of how it went. Nicole sitting in the little alcove booth they gave us. Really nice and private. Most of the booths were like this, some were larger allowing for 4 or more people to eat together.Note the little electric stove-top on the table where the fondues and cooking styles are put. (Notice the rose and balloons on the table...courtesy of me :) ) Same picture...but now with me in it! yay. They brought us the cheese and gave us bread, apples and veggies to dip in there. But really...this is a 21st birthday and the food is not whats important.....this is what is.... Nicole's first drink....a pomegranate COSMO. She said it was good. Here is the aformentioned cheese and dippings. Not sure how you feel about dipping granny smith apples in fondue, but its actually better than you might think. One might also think that real food items would have been dipped in the cheese but the cheese fondue is actually like the "appetizer"....the real entree is the cooking style... Shown here...There was filet mignon, garlic and herb chicken, balsamic beef, pork, shrimp, mushroom ravioli, and a red pepper ravioli... Along with veggies to dip in our cooking style which was a COQ AU VIN... Which is shown right here. It takes about 2-3 min to cook the pieces of food. At first it was slightly difficult to get the times down right, and we even found that simply letting it sit in the liquid rather than on the dipping fork worked better for some foods (like chicken). Notice how they give each person their own personal dipping forks. Of course no fondue dinner is complete without CHOCOLATE and dessert. Here are all the fixins for dessert. Brownies, bananas, pound cake, marshmallows, strawberries and cheesecake. More on that stuff in a minute...now for the dipping They have 7 kinds of chocolate fondue to choose. We choose the "flaming turtle" which is chocolate caramel and pecans flambeed together. We went sans pecans though....still it was really really good. So here's how dinner went...in a more prose form. After sitting down and deciding on the dinner drink for Nicole...it didn't take long, we moved onto ordering food. The menu (on their website if u want to peek) has options to either choose a 4 course "Big Night Out" meal or to create your own meal and decide on courses yourself. If you decide to do the Big Night Out like we did...you pick a cheese fondue, a salad, a cooking style and the types of food you are going to have, and finally a chocolate fondue. Of the types of food there are three choices, for 84 92 and 96 dollars PER COUPLE respectively. We choose the $84 dollar one. The only difference between the three is that the more expensive ones also give you some fish filets and lobster tails...but we figured it wasn't worth it. There are 5 or 6 types of cheese ranging from Mediterranean combinations to a cheddar cheese fondue made with beer and heavy cheddar's (heartattack waiting to happen). We went iwth the traditional Swiss. What is cool is that htey bring it all to the table and puit it together there...so they pour in some sherry, garlic, spices, and the cheese then mix it together...pretty cool. Like I said before, the apples were actually pretty good to dip and the bread and veggies were good too. But we didn't eat a ton of it cause there was filet mignon and CHOCOLATE! on the way. Inbetween, there is a salad course...which seems woefully out of place. I know salad expands the stomach and all, but really it doesn't seem to fit between all these cool fondues and whatnot. This was especially true for us...because...and I know this will sound gross, but bear with me....because Nicole found a dead fly in her salad. And no...there is NO picture of that. Just take my word for it. But all is well! We didn't go running out of the restaurant, not a problem. We told the waiter and he was very generous. He did 2 things for us. 1) he comped us the salads and 2) and MOST IMPORTANTLY, during the dessert course he told us we could have as much stuff as we wanted and ask for more without any additional charge...and we took full advantage of that...but I'm getting ahead of myself. Next was dinner itself. The Coq Au Vin is just a fancy word for vegetable mushroom white wine broth...no biggie. Again, they had a few choices including one based in canola oil so you could fry your food! Anyway, all the food was really good in there...especially the shrimp and the pork. The macaroni was even pretty good. Finally came dessert....YAY! Like I said we took advantage of our free dessert food stuff...good times. We asked for extra strawberries, bannanas and brownies, because those were the best! Also, they gave use new dipping forks for the dessert course...in case you were wondering. All in all, a really nice dinner...fly not withstanding. We likely will go back, I really enjoyed the whole thing, nicole was more of a fan of the chocolate part....totally understandable. A very special birthday
Hi everyone, Busy busy busy week. I pulled my first all nighter of the year last night. And when i mean all nighter...I mean all night. 6:15am was my ending point...I'm so dead tired and just frustrated that I've had so much to do. Oh well. Anyway, tomorrow will be a better day, because its Nicole's 21st Birthday! In celebration we are going to the "Melting Pot". A fondue restaurant in Boston...should be pretty cool. The link is below, take a look at the menu, its pretty interesting. http://www.meltingpot.com/locations.aspx?z=&n=612555Thats it and thats all. I'll post some pictures if we take them Love Tom | | Tuesday, September 25th, 2007 | | 10:38 am |
I need all of your help
Hi everyone, I promise in the next few days to post something about what I've been doing. Class and work have been totally consuming every moment I have, it stinks. For my business plan class I need to collect 20 emails of which NO MORE than 10 can be students (so I need adults). Its for a survey that we need to send out to collect market data. You aren't required to complete it when its sent to you but I do need to send in 20 emails as part of my grade. If you could collect emails of people who'd be willing to participate I'd appreciate it. The school won't keep the emails to spam or solicit you with, they delete them after the survey comes out. They are due friday, so i need them by thursday. Just a note...I only need EMAIL ADDRESSES Thanks everyone...I appreciate the help. Chicken Cutlets!
I made chicken cutlets last night, after my night class. The cutlets weren't as thin as I would have liked, Shaws didn't really have a good chicken selection. But I found some pretty good stuff. I made the breadcrumb mixture and washed the chicken and all that. They came out so perfect, I'm so excited. I really got the recipe absolutely perfect. Just the way grandma makes them. Really. They looked, tasted, smelled, all the way grandma's do. Still not there yet, but thats as close as I've ever gotten them. anyways just thought I'd share. Thats it and thats all Tom | | 2:17 pm |
One Week Down
Hello everyone, Its the end of the first week...kind of a busy week, but certainly that will increase as time goes on. Looking forward to a relaxing weekend and really getting to settle into college in a more social manner. Here are my classes and teachers, a preview I always enjoy doing at the start of every year. AC340-Accounting Info Systems-Prof. Baxter. ---He looks like he could have graduated college with Jenna, he's so young. But he's also working on his PHD and has several kids and has moved around a lot since graduating...so he's told us, so I have no idea of exactly how old he is. He's a nice guy though, a lot of fun...definitely looks like we'll have a good class with him. Plus, he quoted DARTH VADER in our first class....can't do much better than that GB301----the bain of my existence till december. Creating a massive business plan for a real company. A finance, marketing and operations management class rolled into one...which means three professors Prof Minor-marketing-older guy, kinda funny, has a mustasche kinda like Howard Taft Prof. Bravo-operations- real business oriented guy. he's nice though, has a really dry wit about him and is a self-proclaimed jackass. But he's actually a pretty good guy. Prof Willett---kinda gives me a vibe like Gelinda in the Wizard of Oz. I think that pretty much says it all HI 342-Revolutionary Peoples- Prof. Beneke----Had him last semester. He's really a great professor, absolutely love his class and the way he teaches. We are going to Lexington and Concord on a fieldtrip to just walk around and talk about the battle....can't beat that LIT395-Psychoanaylsis and Lit-Prof. Lilly----Had him also last semester. One of my other fav professors, runs a really great class and makes everything interesting. Also is a guy who likes old films and Gary Grant. All in all, good professors, lots of work...but I'll get through it Thats in and thats all Tom | | Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 | | 9:10 pm |
Back and Better than Ever
Hello everyone, The blog is back...after 17 long and eventful weeks. None of which need be recapped here...so we look forward to the future and to the start of the 2007 Fall Semester at Bentley. Moving in today wasn't bad. Took a little while and by the time Chris and Mom left, the room was an unmitigated mess...just terrible. Boxes and bags everywhere....furniture out of place...clothes all over. It was terrible. So what did I do? Well...in my infinite wisdom, I decided to add to the clutter. 16 books and my very first use of a credit card later...i was back with more bags and still a messy apartment. So what did I do? Further proof of my infinite wisdom, I went food shopping. I made a nice list and 78 bucks later (MIND YOU...I BUDGETED 75 BUCKS EACH GROCERY TRIP) i had my first set of groceries for my new kitchen. They included...hot dogs and buns (for when i don't feel like cooking) cans of sauce (on sale!) olive oil, macaroni (5 for 3!) and the other staples. Back in the room, the mess just got bigger. I put my groceries away then sat on the one piece of couch not filled with stuff. I pondered for a minute the layout of the room, then began the slow work of organizing. I did clothes first, some under the bed, most in the drawers. Then it was bins and boxes, all placed under the bed and on shelves. Then came the fun of the kitchen. Pots and plates away, along with my utensils and little kitchen tools it was appliance time! FUN WITH APPLIANCES! Of course all the appliances i have came in boxes with 9000000 parts....so there was more mess, but after a bit I got it all figured out. On two little tables in the corner, i put my skillet, my toaster oven and the espresso machine, making a nice little work area. Then on the main table I placed my large cutting board, knives and my blender. Given the non-existent counter space, and small tables...I did a nice job. And best of all...no need to store pots in the oven... So now of course, with room clean, food bought and kitchen set....it was dinner time! So what might you guess would be my first meal in the apartment? Well its obvious, the only meal fit to christen a new kitchen. homemade sauce, macaroni, and grandpa's meatballs....of course. Just as I was about to do this, some of my friends showed up and brought a Wii, so I had a bit of an audience. Everything of course...came out perfect. Complete with almost whole cloves of garlic in each meatball...grandpa would have been happy. I made just enough to fill one of my big tupperwares (my friends already ate) so I happy plenty for tmw and beyond. All in all, a pretty good start. Glad to be back. Hope everyone is well. Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Thursday, April 26th, 2007 | | 3:56 am |
A little Catch Up...and something for Uncle Mike
Its about 4:00am... the reason I'm awake is because I'm working on a paper, and I spent all day at the Vanguard, so this... the wee hours of the morn are the only times that I have to do such work. Ah...the life of an editor. There's a bird outside somewhere near my window. He doesn't seem to know its night-time. Every night, starting around 11pm, he or she...starts chirping away like its mid-day. At first it bothered me,now...not so much. I talked to Kenny the last few days. He says "I have something for you". Some sort of job, working in accounting...likely doing some of the stuff I did last year. I'm happy...and pretty excited. I had a good time last summer, and probably will again this time.I'm waiting till Monday to call and accpet it, just in case IBM or ESPN calls me. I'd love for ESPN to call. A job in their accounting department would be sweet sweet. I'll admit though, part of me was real excited at the thought of having to go out and possibly find a job if no internships called back and if Kenny couldn't get me anything. Part of me looked forward to possibly finding a job at a restaurant working as a sous chef or cook. It would have been cool, just striking out on my own of sorts, and trying to do something a little different and successful. Take a trip off the beaten path so to speak. Part of me wants to know what Jerry Maguire felt like driving down the road belting Tom Petty's "Free Fallin" out the window at the top of his lungs. (Oddly enough that song just came on my playlist...just as I was typing that...WEIRD!) But I'm going to take the job (so don't anyone worry). As much as I hate, and i do mean HATE to admit it...the money matters. One day its not going to be about the money, that I can promise. But don't get me wrong, I'm real grateful that Ken did this for me...again. One day I'll repay him for it. Now sure how yet, but I will. Its not one of those things thats a question...that goes on the list of "things to do in life"...somewhere between "hockey road trip" and "make the perfect meatball"...its just something that HAS to be done. Oh...and here's a little something for Uncle Mike. The Bentley Rugby team for the 2ND STRAIGHT YEAR....ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Thats right...NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Our teams has not lost a game since 2004. We dominate everyone. We scored about 850 points this season...and gave up 85. Thats 10x more scored than allowed. That is disgusting...its unheard of. We beat the Citadel, Allegehny (who we beat 85-0) and Furman college...who was a three time champ from 2002-2005. We beat them all. We stand alone at the top of the rugby mountain. I thought you'd enjoy that Uncle Mike. Anyway...its getting to be that time. Gotta get back to this paper...It's due in about 10 hours. Thats it and thats all Love Tom P.S. Click on the link below. I wrote that about Vtech last week in the paper. We colored the paper orange and maroon and I wrote that editorial in tribute, with help from my managing editor Dan. Enjoy. http://media.www.bentleyvanguard.com/media/storage/paper141/news/2007/04/19/News/today.We.Are.All.Hokies-2869485.shtml?reffeature=htmlemailedition | | Thursday, April 19th, 2007 | | 2:43 am |
Top of the Hub
So I know you've all been waiting for these pictures. They aren't great cause well...I'm a terrible photographer. Give me a large knife and a cucumber and I'm steady as a rock...put a camera in my hand and I'm all jittery and shaky...go figure. Anyways...here's some of the best pictures I came up with...enjoy. Fenway Park...not great because of the bright lights. There was actually a game going on...all the people look like ants, so you can't actually watch the game very well...still really cool. (Just a side note...I'll be there on May 2nd to see the SOX take on the A's...And I just passed up a ticket to the Red Sox Yankee game on Friday) The lamb shank...very good. No need for a knife, you can pull it right off the bone with the food. There was some sort of tangy/bitter au jou (is that how you spell it?) sauce on the bottom of the dish as well as some great garlic mashed potatoes. Really really really good. Both Nicole and I had it. They of course had steak and other stuff, but it was a little pricey and honestly...I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money (around 44) on a single dish at a restaurant...I just find something wrong with it. If I'm dropping that much money on one dish...I'll be making it myself in my own kitchen...but I digress By the way, look in the upper left corner of this picture, on the little blue plate. Thats the butter they brought out for the bread...it was in little perfect melon-baller sized balls. The bread was really good too, but both Nicole and I had a good laugh over the butter. The following lyric kept running through my head as I looked out the window (52 floors up I might add). "Imagine all the people..." Probably the only good picture I took of the view. That was right from the window we were sitting at. theres the CHARLES River and the pepper bridge thingy. On the left is the Cambridge area and on the right just at the end of the picture is Boston itself. What's great is that the dim the lights in the restaurant as it gets darker outside, so that you can still see the view...amazing. Now thats a good looking picture. I know its a little blurry, but the other picture that was taken of us was just plain horrible...so this being the least objectionable of the two, here it is...me and nicole sitting at our table by the window. You can't really see it, but Nicole is wearing a really nice dress in the picture. My suit doesn't look all that bad...thats a new tie by the way...for some reason it kept curving a bit to the right the whole night...weird. Notice...no hat. Wow...something else I noticed...my head is really really round...like a freakin basketball. I also hate the fact that I have a widow's peak...stupid genetics.Once again...I digress (again). On the other hand...Nicole looks very nice in this picture, despite my camera and the hidden blurry feature that it seems to be locked on. In case anyone else was wondering here's what we had. 1 shared salad (9 bucks...yes a 9 dollar salad...no it wasn't worth nine dollars...but it was still good. At the very least...I can say "I've had a nine dollar salad"...so I got that going for me, which is good) both had the lamb as I said. Shared a "warm chocolate cake" dessert which we had to order 15 minutes before we wanted it..cause they make it fresh and warm for you...sweet. Also a nine dollar item. What does nine dollar warm chocolate cake taste like? Well, in a word... MMMMMMMMMMMMM :) Had a great time. The place is great, the food is good, the jazz lounge on the other side of the restaurant looked great with the live band, and the lounge menu looked really good too, quite a fun place. The staff was nice and let us walk all the way around the restaurant to get the full view. It doesn't spin like I had originally thought. I think going back to sit in the lounge have a drink and a snack and listen to jazz is definitely something I'd like to do. Maybe a good thing to do when I'm 21. And honestly...we didn't spend a lot of cash. We expected to break the bank a little, but not at all considering where we were and all that. Spent a bit more than we would spend on going to dinner and the movies any other night. It wasn't a wallet breaking place, and hey...at a nice place like this...you definitely get what you pay for...great service, great food, and a great view. Can't ask for much more. All that being said...despite how great it was...it doesn't beat Easter dinner, not by a long shot. 3 weeks till its time to come home!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Sunday, April 15th, 2007 | | 7:57 pm |
Same Student New Classes
Hello everyone. I chose my classes the other day for next semester. Here's the lineup: HI 342 Revolutionary Peoples---a class about the United States, from the end of the French and Indian War, right up until the Louisiana Purchase. taught by my currently history professor. AC 340 Accounting Info Systems---class about creating and navigating accounting info systems. More of a computer/database class than anything else I think. GB 301---Required class which involves making a business plan and working with real companies. Apparantly takes up a lot of work and is genuinely considered the hardest and worst class at Bentley. LIT 392 Psychoanalysis and Lit---class that involves taking the teachings and readings of people like Freud and adapting them to famous literary works. Taught by my current Lit professor. So thats it...4 classes (though GB 301 technically counts as 2 so its like I'm taking 5). I have two of the same professors...no class weds (because of the paper) one class friday morning, and only 1 night class on monday. Schedule looks to be pretty good...hopefully plenty of cooking time in there. Speaking of food...Nicole and I went to Top of the Hub on Friday. A full write up...and pictures!!! coming in a bit. Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 | | 1:54 pm |
Room for Two
I have picked my room for next year. I will be living in Rhodes Hall Situated right in the middle of campus, right near the Student Center and the bookstore. I will NOT be at the bottom of the hill again. I will be rooming with Jeremy my old roomie. There will be an XBOX 360 (maybe a Wii) in our room as well as 2 TVs...can't wait. But the best part... oh the best part of it all. I get my own kitchen. :) I'm starting a collection now of old (but still useable) pots, pans, and cutlery. I'm so happy right now I can barely contain myself. I feel like cooking something. Hope everyone is good. I'll be home in about 9 days...can't wait for Easter. My M&M ban is killing me. Nicole's dad sent me peanut M&Ms not knowing that I can't eat them. Anyway, Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 | | 5:32 pm |
Its Over
The season is over. We lost 64-51 to the #1 team in the nation. So the season is over, thats it. 32-1 A pretty good season nonetheless. Yet, I'm upset. Not because we lost, but because of the demeanor of most of the rest of the campus. Everyone else seemed to be in an outrage over it. Certainly, we should be upset they lost, but really, that gym was empty for the first 23 games of the season. Its only when they started handing out free t-shirts and when we got on national tv that anyone bothered to show up and that going to the men's bball games became "trendy". I hate that. I hate that there is such a "fair weather" mentality around here. That suddenly everyone acts like they were following the team since day 1. This is of course coming from the guy that given a chance to be where I was last night, OR at the Rangers Flyers game....I would take the Rangers every time without question, even without knowing the outcome of the two games prior to making my decision. I'm not sure what that means exactly. Maybe its just that I love hockey more than basketball...yea thats probably it. But at least I was there at game 1 and I was there at game 33. Just thought I'd share. Thats it and thats all Love Tom | | Tuesday, March 20th, 2007 | | 10:28 pm |

We.....are the champions..... On Saturday....Bentley defeated Saint Rose 61-51 in the NE-10 conference title game. We stormed the court, cut down the nets, and raised the trophy. It was awesome. We jumped up and down the whole game, and if you listened to the broadcast you can tell that by the end Dan (my partner) and I kind of lost it. My voice still hurts. I pulled the Jack Buck "Go Crazy!" call as well as a few others. Anyway...that makes us 29-0 tieing the NCAA New England record for most consecutive games won (this is a NATIONAL record not just a DII record) tieing us with....Holy Cross from 1949-1950. That team was led by a guy named Bob Cousy....you might have heard of him. So now its on to the NCAA regionals, if we win that then its on to the ELITE EIGHT in Springfield MA to crown the NATIONAL CHAMPION... Just thought everyone ought to know. Thats it and thats all Love Tom |
